Hydrogen Project Calculator
Hovogen meticulously consider every detail to assist your industry in reducing carbon emissions through the adoption of green hydrogen. To facilitate this, we have developed the Hydrogen Calculators. These tools enable you to calculate the mass of hydrogen, convert between hydrogen mass and volume, and translate hydrogen mass into energy content.
Our data is derived from real-life industrial experiences, providing a comprehensive calculation logic for green hydrogen projects. We aim to empower our clients with insights that serve both industrial and educational purposes.

Hydrogen Project Calculator - Explanation
This calculator helps estimate hydrogen production, storage, and energy conversion based on power input and system specifications. It consists of several interconnected modules:
1. Power Generation Module
- Calculates "daily power generation (kWh)" from input power (kW/h) and operating time (hours).
2. Hydrogen Production Module
- Estimates "theoretical hydrogen production (Nm³/h)" based on:
- Electricity available for H₂ production
- Electrolysis efficiency (4.5 kWh/Nm³)
- Balance-of-Plant (BOP) consumption (0.5 kWh/Nm³)
3. System Specifications
- Allows selection of "electrolyzer capacity (Nm³/h)" and calculates:
- Equivalent flow rate (ml/min)
- Number of systems needed
- Total H₂ production (Nm³)
4. Consumption/Storage Ratio
- Splits hydrogen output into:
- Consumption (%) – Used for fuel cells or other applications
- Storage (%* – Stored for later use
5. Fuel Cell Module
- Estimates "electricity regenerated (kW)" from consumed hydrogen via fuel cells, using a conversion factor (13.5 L/min per kW).
6. Hydrogen Storage Module
- Calculates storage requirements based on:
- Hydrogen volume (L)
- Storage pressure (350 or 700 bar)
- Tank size (L)
- Number of tanks needed
Key Applications
- Renewable hydrogen projects (solar/wind-powered electrolysis)
- Fuel cell energy storage (H₂-to-power conversion)
- Hydrogen refueling stations (storage capacity planning)
Tip:
For projects in Europe, consider complementing this tool with the Levelised Cost of Hydrogen Calculator from the European Hydrogen Observatory. This specialized resource enables region-specific cost analysis for electrolysis projects, incorporating local energy prices, infrastructure costs, and policy factors. It provides valuable insights into both capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operational expenditures (OPEX), particularly useful for preliminary feasibility studies in EU member states.
